My Dear People,
Today’s Gospel deals with the transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus reveals to Peter, James, and John something special—“He is from Heaven.” While Jesus goes through suffering and death, this revelation will help the three Apostles and enable them to inspire and give strength to the rest of ... My Dear People,
In this Gospel, Jesus, a wise teacher, instructs His Disciples with short, pithy aphorisms employing memorable examples and word-pictures. The fountainhead of this kind of instruction in Israel was Solomon, David’s “son” or heir. Now Jesus, the ultimate Son and Heir of David, surpasses Solomon in ... Read More »

My Dear People,
Today we have the famous speech—the “Sermon On The Plain.” This is little different from Matthew’s “Sermon on the Mount.” Matthew was writing for the Jewish Christians, who understood that the meaning of “mountain” was a special place where God is revealed. Luke’s “sermon on the ... Read More »

My Dear People,
Today we celebrate the presentation of Jesus to the Lord. As it was prescribed by the law of Moses, the first-born male must be dedicated to God. This law was to counteract the pagan procedure of dedicating the first-born son to a pagan god. For that ... Read More »

My Dear People,
Now we begin Sundays in Ordinary Time. This miracle at Cana links this Sunday with the feast of the Epiphany and with Jesus’ Baptism—all are epiphanies of his glory, which reveals Jesus as the Messiah.
In Jesus was fulfilled today’s reading of Isaiah. This is also ... Read More »
The Baptism of the Lord, 2025
Posted by Christy .. on 1/14/25
My Dear People,
While using expressive imagery, John performs a Baptism (with water) and proclaims he is not the Messiah. He, who is on His way, will come with the dignity of one who has no human equal, and with the authority of a supreme Judge that belongs to God.
In Christ’s baptism we can find a similarity in the way the sacrament of Baptism affects a person. Christ’s baptism was the exemplar of our own. In it, the mystery of the Blessed Trinity is revealed. The faithful, on receiving Baptism, are consecrated by the invocation of and by the power of the Blessed Trinity. Similarly, heaven opening signifies that the power, and the effectiveness of this sacrament comes from above, from God. The newly baptized have the road to heaven opened up for them, a road which original sin had ... Read More »
